Smalls Finds (But Lots of Questions) From a Recent NYC Privy Dig

These artifacts all showed up in the sifter after the night soil layer was screened in a recent privy dig. Of course, this image excludes the usual items that one finds while sifting such as porcelain and glass buttons, marbles, doll parts and many other items. (I will do another posting of these -- typical but neat -- artifacts next.) All of the items found were in a context that date from the 1850s to perhaps the late 1870s.
Perhaps the coolest artifact to come from the hole was a carved dog that we guess is native American. Does anyone have a clue? Based upon the other items we found (including the number of naval buttons), it was our best guess that one of the house occupants was a seafarer and the carved dog was carried back from some distant place such as the American Northwest. Again, we would appreciate any ideas.
The buttons were also a mystery although one is obviously a naval button. In addition, a bunch of early Brooklyn police buttons but I forget to take a picture. Any help on the buttons posted here would also be appreciated.
Now this is a mighty unusual find for us. It appears to be an advertising piece for a brick manufacturer in Philadelphia. Pretty cool. I must sound like a broken record, but again, any information would be much appreciated.
And the request for information applies to this last artifact. As you can see, on this shaped heart there are two religious symbols carved: a six-pointed star (usually Jewish star) and a cross.
Good luck digging and don’t forget to sift!
