Wierd ceramic objects....

We have been bottle digging in a river bed near where some old mills were and about 15 of these redware items have surfaced. At first we thought it was a cover or stopper, but it's big. Plus, now after so many are coming up we wonder if it's some type holder from the mills perhaps?? any ideas?
Will post pics of the bottles & clay pipes coming up soon......
